CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A teacher (sometimes known as a school teacher) is someone who instructs students. At a school or other site of formal education, the position of teacher is frequently formal and ongoing. A person wishing to become a teacher in many countries must first receive a certain professional certification or qualifications from a university or institution (Moos, 1979). Pedagogy, or the science of teaching, may be one of these professional qualifications. Teachers, like other professions, may be required to continue their education after they have earned their certification, a process called as continuing professional development. A teacher may utilize a lesson plan to help students learn by laying out a course of study known as the curriculum (Goorian, 1997). The job of a teacher varies by culture. Teachers may teach reading and numeracy, as well as crafts or vocational training, the arts, religion, civic and communal duties, and life skills (1999). A personal tutor, or, more traditionally, a governess, is a teacher who assists an individual with their education. Informal learning can be aided by a temporary teacher or anybody with knowledge or skills in a larger community environment (Fraser, B.J 1982). Teaching can take place informally, inside the family (known as home schooling), or in the larger community. Formal education can be provided by a paid professional. In certain civilizations, such professionals have the same standing as doctors, attorneys, engineers, and accountants. Teachers' knowledge and professional status are instilled, preserved, and updated by a variety of bodies (Grace, 1980). Many governments across the globe run teacher's colleges, which are typically designed to serve and defend the public interest by certifying, controlling, and enforcing the teaching profession's standards of conduct (Mut, 1978). According to Baker J.A. (1999), one of the functions of teacher colleges could be to establish clear standards of practice, provide for ongoing teacher education, investigate complaints involving members, conduct hearings into allegations of professional misconduct and take appropriate disciplinary action, and accredit teacher education programs (Hart, 1980). He goes on to say that in many cases, teachers in public schools must be members in good standing with the college community. In education, a tutor is a teacher who works with a student one-on-one. The goal is usually achieved through an informal or formal learning technique, which includes a course of study and lesson plan that teaches teaching skills, information, or thinking abilities (Uzi, 1997). Pedagogy is a term used to describe various teaching methods. The importance of teachers in nation-building and development cannot be overstated (Vicent, 1999). This research is for those who are curious about how a teacher's academic qualifications influence a student's academic achievement.

1.2      STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

'No country' can be higher than the teachers' level (Henry, 2000). This suggests that the educational level of the instructor has a significant impact. The student's performance. As a result, the research will investigate

 i. The notion of a teacher.

ii. The significance of a teacher.

iii. The impact of teacher qualifications on student academic achievement.

iv. The steps that may be made to ensure that education has a more beneficial impact.

1.3     OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The research will look into:

i. The definition of a teacher.

ii.  The significance of a teacher in the society.

iii.  The impact of teacher qualifications on students' academic achievement.

iv. The steps that may be made to ensure a more beneficial impact on schools.

1.4              RESEARCH QUESTIONS

i. What is a teacher's definition?

ii. What is the significance of a teacher in the society?

iii. What is the  impact of teacher qualifications on students' academic achievement ?

iv. What steps may be made  to ensure that school has a more beneficial impact?

1.5              SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

i. The teacher, as a role model for the students, will have the opportunity to learn new teaching techniques and attend workshops, in-service training, seminars, and professional courses to expand his or her knowledge in his or her field or area of specialization.

ii. Students: What are the benefits of teacher certification for students? The strongest influence on how well students perform is directly related to how well teachers educate those students.

- When the teacher is teaching, the students will benefit by gaining knowledge.

iii. Parent: The teacher qualification will increase the parents' interest in their children's achievement.

- When parents monitor their children's progress, they become more invested in their education. And such parents will be able to use gifts to motivate their wards or children.

- It increases a parent's confidence in their children.

i. Government: With the help of teacher education, the study will be beneficial to the government. There will be a pause on the government's part to allow teachers to attend training, workshops, seminars, counseling, and other in-service programs in order to better equip teachers. This has a positive effect on the students.

1.6              SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The research will be conducted out at Ogun state's Odogbolu Local Government Area.

1.7              DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

These studies were confined by a number of factors, including the study's short duration. There was also the issue of money, as well as the pressures of school and work that had to be combined with the studies. There was also the issue of some respondents' unwillingness to cooperate.
