AN EXAMINATION OF POST COVID-19 EFFECT ON NIGERIA UNIVERSITIES: A CASE STUDY OF UNIVERSITY OF PORTHARCOURT
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The nature of universities environment allows students to associate and live and in close proximity at campuses. They're also pulsating cultural locations where students from various disciplines congregate(Danso, 2020). However, the fast spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak has severely undermined the foundations of this unique ecology, causing anxiety about the ramifications for universities(Danso, 2020). As a result educational administrators have been forced to postpone classes.
Coronaviruses as claimed by WHO(2019), are a family of viruses that cause ailments ranging from the common cold to more serious disorders such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome(Goplani, 2020). Originally, these viruses were passed from animals to humans. SARS, for example, was conveyed to people by civet cats, while MERS was spread to humans by a camel. Several coronaviruses that have not yet infected people are prevalent in animals.
Coronavirus gets its name from the Latin word corona, which means crown or halo. It appears to be enveloped by a solar corona under an electron microscope. The novel coronavirus, dubbed SARS-CoV-2 by Chinese officials after its discovery, is a strain of bacteria that has never been seen in humans(Ogunode, 2020). Although human-to-human transference has been established, little was known about it.
Countries all across the globe were frantically trying to stop the coronavirus epidemic from spreading. According to WHO (2020), the COVID-19 epidemic is a universal health emergency, necessitating the declaration of a pandemic crisis.
Nigeria verified its first case in Lagos State in February 2020, through an Italian citizen who had returned from Milan(Ogunode, 2020). As occurrences of COVID-19 spread, the Federal Ministry of Education mandated that all educational establishments shut down and allow students to return home as a technique to restrict the virus's spread.
The impact of the pandemic on education was tracked by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). They assume that as a result of the novel, 87 percent of the world's students were affected by school closures. The majority of these pupils are in elementary and secondary schools, but millions of students in pre-primary and postsecondary education are also affected(Hanson, 2021). Notably, m More than 180 nations closed down schools across the board, while others have instituted localised closures. In Nigeria, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on higher education has been identified as follows: reduction of international education; disruption of higher education's academic calendar; cancellation of local and international conferences; teaching and learning gap; loss of workforce in educational institutions; and reduction in higher education's budget.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The emergence of COVID-19 has had a wide range of consequences for Nigeria's educational system. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, students from all over the world returned to their homelands. This epidemic wreaked havoc on countries in a variety of ways. Students studying abroad, for example, were precluded from completing their studies, and many students wishing to study abroad were unable to do so because governments prohibited inter-country travel(Goplani, 2020).
Furthermore, COVID-19 disrupted the academic calendars of Nigeria's institutions of higher learning. According to Ogunode (2020), the shutdown of all educational institutions, from basic schools to higher institutions, will have an impact on students' academic programs.
Due to the pandemic, several conferences on various programs that were scheduled for the first and second quarters of 2020 were canceled. This is due to the fact that many higher education institutions in Nigeria have not completely incorporated ICT into teaching and learning programs across the country(Koomson, 2020). According to Wikipedia (2020), the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on educational systems throughout the world, resulting in widespread school and university closures. As of April 2020, over 421 million students were out of school as a result of school closures in response to COVID-19 prevention measures(Fordjour, 2021). Hence, on March 23, 2020, almost 200 nations enforced a national shutdown, affecting about 98 percent of the world's student population, according to UNESCO surveillance. In view of the above, this study aims to examine the effect of post COVID-19 on tertiary institutions.
1.3 OBJECTIV OF THE STUDY
Generally, this study aims at investigating the influence of post COVID 19 on tertiary institutions. Specifically, the study bears the following objectives;
1. Ascertain whether Covid-19 disrupted the academic programmes of Nigerian Universities.
2. Identify the effort of Nigerian Government towards the prevention of Covid-19.
3. Ascertain the extent to which the Covid-19 negatively affected undergraduate students.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The study will be guided by the following questions.
1) Did Covid-19 disrupted the academic programmes of Nigerian Universities?
2) What were the efforts made by Nigerian Government towards the prevention of Covid-19?
3) What is the extent to which the Covid-19 negatively affected undergraduate students?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
There is no question that such a research will make a major and good impact.
This research will be of high relevance to high school students, lecturers, and professors since it details the harm caused by the development of Covid-19, its impact on tertiary institutions, and appropriate treatments.
This study will also serve as a source of information for anybody pursuing research on this topic.
1.6 SCOPE/DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
Generally, this study an examines post covid-19 effect on Nigeria universities. The study is narrowed to ascertaining whether Covid-19 disrupted the academic programmes of Nigerian Universities, identifying the effort of Nigerian Government towards the prevention of Covid-19, and ascertaining the extent to which the Covid-19 negatively affected undergraduate students.a case study of university of portharcourt. The respondents for this study will be obtained from the University of Portharcourt, Rivers State.
