A STUDY OF IN-SCHOOL FACTORS AFFECTING CAREER CHOICE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

A person's career is a sequence of occupations in a certain field of work, generally increasing in responsibility as time goes on. Choice Is the act of selecting between two or more alternatives, according to the Oxford Advanced Learner's dictionary; anything that you can choose, the right to choose, or the potential of choosing. The fundamental reasons why people, especially young people, must pick a job are driven by both inner and external factors to the individual making the decision. Personal aptitudes and educational achievement, according to Bandura (2001), are factors impacting the process of professional growth. The philosophy of education in industrialized nations and other areas of the globe is founded, among other things, on the development of the person into a sound and effective citizen completely integrated into the society (NPE, 2004). Various countries have explored and implemented innovative educational reforms in order to meet their social demands, particularly the necessity to equip individuals for employment and make them economically and self-sufficient. Education is regarded as a'meal ticket' and a 'lunch pad' into the labor force. Education serves a vital purpose in preparing young people for their future careers. Adolescents and teenagers frequently find it difficult to pick a job that will meet their personal, economic, and intellectual goals because they lack the information to investigate many career alternatives and possibilities, as well as the understanding of the pre-requisites for such careers. (2009) (Wattles). Not only must one conduct thorough career study before to making a job decision in order to keep up with changing socioeconomic conditions. The majority of secondary school pupils lack reliable knowledge on employment opportunities to aid them in making good career decisions. Personality, globalization, socialization, role factors, social support, and accessible resources such as knowledge and financial resources all impact career choice (Kerka, 2000). Years in school and the overall number of scientific and math courses studied in secondary school are linked to the choosing of science and math as majors in college (Person, 2003). Parents, socioeconomic status, level of education, family size and temperament are all factors that influence job interest and decision-making at home. Sex role, age, religion, and family are all factors that influence profession choice, according to Geshinde (2001). More importantly, via family connection, the home supplies the basic necessities in choosing a vocation. The factors affecting whether or not students who graduated from an urban area pick an Agricultural Education Program. Secondary School (Secondary) Students who do not want to pursue a career in agriculture are influenced by their educational and employment experiences. This might be due to a lack of interest in the field, for example (Bowen, 2005). There are also gender disparities in career development, with children as young as 13-14 years old developing two cognitive abilities essential to career development: self-concept and views of vocations. In terms of gender differences in career development aspects, studies have shown that females have different career patterns than males (Cheu, 2003) and that females had higher scores on career commitment than men. Individuals must evaluate highly important factors and pick occupations that will meet their personal, economic, and intellectual goals in order to be satisfied with their vocations.
