A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF VIRTUAL CLASSROOM AND TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM TEACHING METHOD IN ATTAINING THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF STUDENT
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A classroom is a space that is primarily used for teaching and learning. Classrooms may be found in a variety of educational settings, including public and private institutions. It is a secure environment in which learning may take place without interruption from outside factors (Barber, 2003). In a school context, the classroom is critical since it is where all teaching and learning activities take place. Hundreds of students in a classroom range from five or six to hundreds of students in a large classroom. The front of the classroom has rows and columns of desks and an instructor. Students and one teacher are generally crammed into one class. This classroom is regarded as a typical classroom because of the way it is taught (Jozefowicz, 2005). This type of classroom may be seen in almost every school throughout the world. However, in Nigerian schools, the classroom is the most common location. The classroom may also be thought of as a learning environment meant to help teachers administer educational courses for students, particularly one that employs computer hardware and software (Barber, 2001). The virtual classroom is the name given to this form of classroom. An online learning environment can alternatively be described as a virtual classroom. The environment might be web-based with a portal or software-based with a downloaded file (Vida, 2000). Various techniques can be used to determine these pupils' results. Tests, assignments, projects, observations, interviews, and questionnaires are among them.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It has been observed that traditional classroom teaching provides more or less on a particular topic that is taught in various classes of the same level, resulting in different importation of knowledge in the student regarding the topic, whereas virtual classroom teaching allows students to learn at their own pace or at a convenient time, allowing for thorough reading and assimilation of the lesson (Melanchuck, 2002). As a result, a study of the virtual classroom against the traditional classroom way of teaching is required.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The goal of the research is to see if the traditional classroom should be utilized for teaching and learning in order to attain the desired standard of achievement in students, or if the virtual classroom system should be used instead.
1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
i. Is the typical classroom teaching style effective in attaining students ’ academic achievement?
ii. Should virtual classrooms be implemented in secondary schools?
iii. Should virtual classrooms be favoured over regular classrooms for improving students ’ academic achievement?
1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The findings of this study will give greater information on the ideal classroom environment for teaching and learning, so that all students learn at the same time and no one is left behind. It will also be convenient for the professors towards the conclusion of the study.
1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The research will only include two groups of students. In group A, 20 (twenty) students will be taught in a regular classroom setting, whereas 20 (twenty) students in group B will be taught in a virtual classroom setting. The student achievement in the aforementioned groups will be evaluated at the conclusion. (Students at the Federal College of Education in Iwo, Osun State).
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Classroom is a space or location, usually in a school, where classes are held.
Traditional classroom is a learning setting in which students sit in rows with a teacher in front of them. Normally, the room is overcrowded.
Virtual classroom is an online-based educational portal that allows for remote study.
