CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGRO UND OF THE STUDY
Basic science is a discipline of science that deals with the basic system of getting information by describing and explaining natural occurrences via observations and experiments. Basic science is a sort of science that focuses on the unity of science and is the only method to educate science in such a manner that the current scientific concepts are taught as a coherent whole (Wikipedia, 2014). Science became one of the three disciplines in the domain of social, environmental, and scientific education in the primary school curriculum in 1999. (SESE). Although there was little emphasis on primary science in the (1971) curriculum for students. In a lot of ways, the curriculum from 1999 is much more extensive than the preceding one. The study of basic science and technology has been deemed critical to the human race's existence and advancement. The importance of science and technology in the education pre-process is a key supporter of this chain. At all levels, science and technology are integrated into all nations' educational systems (Dahar & Faize, 2011). There are appropriate techniques for acquiring abilities in these fields of information as bodies of knowledge. The Nigerian government, via its education policy, strongly encourages the teaching and study of science and technology in elementary schools.
However, since the basic level of education is the basis, the optimal purposes and objectives of educational setup would not be realized without the use of teaching aids in teaching and learning of Basic science and technology. There is a link between a student's academic achievement and the availability and utilization of instructional materials or audio-visual aids in the classroom. According to Jamison et al (1981), as mentioned in Dahar&Faize (2011), physical facilities and availability of teaching aids, as well as the degree of teacher education, all of these factors contribute to the quality of the classroom and learning, which predicts and forecasts child accomplishment. Similarly, Mwamwauda (1987), as quoted by Dahar&Faize (2011), claims that educational amenities, such as textbooks, are important factors in students' accomplishment. Pupils were passive listeners before contemporary education was adopted, and teachers were astronomical bodies who knew what, when, and how to educate. However, in recent years, the advantage has swung to students. Teaching aids are favored since they account for 85 percent of all teaching and learning (jadal,2011). They help the individual student stay focused on what the instructor is teaching in the classroom. Not just for students, but also for instructors, teaching aids make a class or lecture more entertaining and memorable. They serve a vital function in directing individual students' attention to the instructor or the issue at hand. Human beings' five sense organs are the gateway to successful learning; sight, hearing, and touching, in particular, provide the person with the most information.
According to study, individuals recall 10% of what they hear, 20% of what they read, and 80% of what they see and do, according to Jerome Bruner, a psychologist at New York University (Lester, 2012). It is also critical to provide sufficient and appropriate human resources to teacher quality for the teaching of all topics in the school curriculum; without teachers as implementers, educational objectives will never be met.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The poor level of performance of secondary school pupils in both local and standardized tests is one of the primary issues confronting Nigeria's education industry. Over time, it has become a major source of worry for scholars, educators, and other education stakeholders. It was discovered that students often fail tests as a result of ineffective teaching techniques and a lack of necessary teaching tools (Afolabi, 2009). As a result, the researchers decided to investigate the influence of teaching aids on secondary school students' academic progress in fundamental science.
1.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following questions have been prepared for the study
1. Is there an availability of teaching aids in secondary schools?
2. What are the effects of teaching aids on students academic achievement?
3. To what extent does teacher utilize the teaching aids for teaching and learning of Basic science?
4. How can there be an improvement in the use of teaching aid in other to improve the academic achievement in basic science?
1.4 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
This general objective of the study is the impact of teaching aids on secondary school student academic achievement in basic science. The specific objective is as follows:
1) To examine if there is availability of teaching aids in secondary schools.
2) To evaluate the effects of teaching aids on students academic achievement.
3) To find out the extent teacher utilize the teaching aids for teaching and learning of Basic science.
4) To find out how to improve the use of teaching aid in other to improve the academic achievement in basic science.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study will examine if there is availability of teaching aids in secondary schools. More so the study will evaluate the effects of teaching aids on students academic achievement. The study will also find out the extent teacher utilize the teaching aids for teaching and learning of Basic science. The study will further find out how to improve the use of teaching aid in other to improve the academic achievement in basic science. The study will be delimited to secondary schools in Abeokuta, Ogun state.
1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This study will be of importance to the following: Government, Principals/Head-Teachers, Teachers, Pupils and Parents.
The Government:
This study will enhance the government to know the usefulness of teaching aids teaching and learning of Basic science. It will also make meaningful ideal in making of syllabus for educational set-up; so as to organize seminars/workshops programmes on the usage of teaching aids.
The Principal/Head Teachers:
The research will give more knowledge and awareness to the Principal/Head Teachers in educational system on how to strategically make provisions of needed and necessary teaching aids in order to promote the study of Basic Science in Junior Secondary school levels.
Teachers:
This study would basically and broadly aid the teachers on how to prudently facilitate, utilize the teaching aids in teaching of Basic science. Teachers will be aware on how to carry out their roles in teaching and learning process, so as to play their vital role effectively in the lives of the pupils in their classrooms; because teachers are best known for the role of education to the pupils/students that are placed in their care.
Pupils: The study will be beneficial to the pupils/students to build the potential in learning of Basic science, it will also guide them in acquiring, discovering the influence and utility of teaching aids to develop interest on the usage of it.
Parents:
this study will be of benefit and important to the parents, However, it would allow them to know the usefulness of teaching aids in the process of teaching and learning of Basic science, they will be able to make mention of this in the meeting of “Parents And Teachers Association” (PTAs).
1.7 DE-LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
In the course of writing and gathering information that are relevant to this project. The researcher encountered some challenges which are demerit to this work and that has caused many difficulties to accurately manage the main period and time stipulated for this work.
During the course of distribution of questionnaire, the researcher on his field for gathering information; some of the respondents are reluctant to fill the items. Some are making mistake in ticking two answers for a statement, Some of them do failed to fill the item all through, Some of the respondent do not even bother to return the questionnaire which the researcher has given to them. Therefore, the researcher was able to retrieve exactly numbers of the questionnaire needed on this study.
