CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

 

Background of the study

Discipline is, without a doubt, the most daunting and stressful aspect of teaching. The instructor faces the pressures of educating, socializing, inspiring, and certifying pupils, but with the aid of a positive classroom environment, this can be accomplished (Fafunwa, 2004; Farrant, 2004). Misconduct by students is a widespread issue that affects schools not just in Nigeria, but also in many other countries around the world. Classroom misbehavior disrupts instruction and learning and is believed to be a precursor to later school dropout and other undesirable social consequences. In Nigeria, the problem of school indiscipline is rated as a major issue among secondary school students. Disruptive behavior is a source of worry for schools, parents, and fellow students whose schooling could be jeopardized. Students are the most valuable tools and critical components of schooling. It is important to guide students to show appropriate attitudes and behaviors both within and outside of the classroom. School administration specifies laws and regulations that govern the actions of employees of the professional organization in order to achieve an orderly and safe school atmosphere and uphold law and order. About all a school has to give students is contingent on classroom discipline (Selfert and Vornberg, 2002). According to Seifert and Vornberg, discipline is linked to both the school's community and environment: "In order for a suitable climate to occur within a school, a certain degree of discipline must exist." Parents may move their children to ‘better' schools in schools where discipline is a major issue, such as when students harass others. And, since well-behaved students typically perform well (Rigby, 2000), their relocation will have an effect on the school's overall success. Teachers' emotional reactions to difficult students will also lead to the use of discipline. However, instead of reducing conduct, punishment may exacerbate it (Dreikurs et al.,1998).  Students’ indiscipline seems to be ubiquitous in the 21st century in Nigerian secondary schools. Child’s discipline is a part of socialization. With recent increase in school enrolment, students discipline problems are bound to accentuate and cause more burdens on teachers and school administrators. Students’ indiscipline has plagued schools leading to series of unrest. It is observed that students resort to unconstitutional measures in channeling their grievances; and it is not unusual that schools have been blamed for the awkward and uncivilized behaviour demonstrated by the students.  This condition has become a source of anxiety for parents and members of the school board, who have suggested that teachers use corrective methods and build rapport between students and teachers as a systematic approach to resolving the issues. Discipline is needed for successful management of the school system if the schools' objectives are to be met. It is a part of managerial responsibilities that entails assessing and correcting subordinate results in order to ensure that the academic industry's goals and strategies for achieving them are met. Every logical method used by teachers to solve challenges in the classroom setting is referred to as discipline in school organization. The school develops a series of guidelines that govern student behavior in order to achieve successful student discipline.

 

Statement of the problem

Students have been uncontrollable and disobedient to themselves, their instructors, school officials, guardians, and culture as a whole. Students engage in a variety of indiscipline behaviors, including boycotting classes, viewing and practicing pornography, lying, harassment, dishonesty, and disobedience to instructors, prefects, and others.rapping school/classmates, alcohol drinking, confronting and stabbing teachers in classrooms, arson, tardiness to school, cultism, substance addiction, insulting/assaulting, cheating, and rioting, to name a few.The degree to the peer group perspectives, parents' socioeconomic successes, parent's mindset, instructor' attitude, school culture, atmosphere, and community affect students' indiscipline behaviors in school is unknown.

 

Objective of the study

1. To investigate the causes of disrespectful behaviour among students of word of promise international.

2. To examine the disciplinary styles set up by the administrative of word of promise international.

Research question

1. What is the cause of disrespectful behaviour among student of word of promise international?

2. What are the disciplinary styles set up by the administrative of word of promise international?

 

Significance of the study

This study will be of importance to public and private school administrator as it will serve as a guide when implementing disciplinary measures to curtail disrespectful behaviour among students. This study will be of benefit to student and researchers who will want to carry out more research on this study.

 

Scope of the study

The aim of this research is to assess the impact of disciplinary styles on students disrespectful behaviors and desire to learn in secondary school. Students of word of promise international will be sample respondents of this research.

 

Limitation of the study

Finance,time constraint and lack of research materials were the major challeges the researcher encountered during the course of this study.

 

Definition of terms

Disrespect: This is refer to as the lacking of respect or courtesy
