THE IMPACT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE CHAPTER ONE

THE IMPACT OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ON STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Violence among secondary school students occurs all throughout the world. Among all secondary school difficulties, none is more debilitating than violence since it affects both the perpetrator and the victim. Violence is a pattern of behavior in which one individual is chosen as the target of hostility by one or more others; the targeted individual (the victim) usually has less power than those who engage in violence (Baron & Bryne, 2015). According to Paszkiewicz (2010), school violence is the use of physical force to harm, abuse, damage, or destroy a child.

Domestic violence, according to Ganley (1989), comprises physical violence, sexual violence, emotional abuse, and abuse of property and pets. Exposure to various types of violence, he claims, has a high potential for being seen as a danger to victims' lives, making them feel weak, powerless, and, in extreme situations, appalled. Bodily violence, according to Dutton (1992), is any action that involves the purposeful use of force against another person's body and may result in physical hurt, injury, and/or discomfort. Pushing, striking, slapping, smothering, using an item to strike, twisting a section of the body, forcing the consumption of an undesired drug, and employing a weapon are all examples of this. Sexual abuse is defined by Dutton (1994) as any unwanted sexual intimacy imposed on an individual by another.

Domestic violence, according to Straus and Gelles (1990), is pervasive and affects all social and economic categories. According to a national survey of over 6,000 American families, between 53% and 70% of aggressive fathers also mistreat their children. Domestic violence is one of the least reported crimes in the United States, with the Department of Justice estimating in 1998 that between 960000 and four million domestic events occurred each year.

According to Justice Department statistics from 1994, over 92 percent of domestic violence charges involved women. Wopadovi (women against domestic violence) Domestic violence affects many Nigerian families in 2014 and, sadly, is on the rise in our culture. Domestic violence has harmed, handicapped, and murdered many individuals, the great majority of them are women. Following recent events in which domestic violence has become frequent and the deaths of spouses and lovers as a result of domestic violence are reported on a daily basis, it has become a top priority to make domestic violence a threat that must be handled. As quickly as possible, face.  Domestic violence, according to Wopadovi, disregards class and social education standards. According to Wikipedia (2004), domestic violence is a concern in many countries of Africa. In Nigeria, there is a profound cultural notion that beating a woman to chastise her spouse is socially acceptable.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Despite the fact that domestic violence is now acknowledged as one of the most entrenched and common types of violence in Nigeria, its impact on pupils has not gotten the same amount of attention (Tony, 2002). As a result of physical, verbal, psychological, and other types of abuse, children who are victims or witnesses to domestic violence may suffer physical, psychological, and behavioral issues. This can have an impact on their school involvement because they may attend to school when they are too terrified to study, and many of them may lag behind in class or in life as a result of their exposure to domestic violence (Wathen, 2003). Domestic violence's short- and long-term mental and physical consequences can have an impact on children' school attendance, success, and behavioral patterns in school, as well as their involvement in the classroom. It is unknown how different types and levels of domestic abuse effect student success and involvement in school.
