SOCIAL NETWORKING AND ITS CONSEQUENCES ON THE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENT

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Many individuals feel that the internet, electronic media, and portals have transformed the globe into a global village. Social networking sites have grown in popularity as a tool for people to remain informed, exchange messages, and keep in touch with virtually any digitally educated student or youngster (Boyd, 2007). Teenagers used to spend their free time alone in their rooms or with close friends outside their homes, putting on new clothing and modeling around the corner. Now, social networking may be seen of as a method of characterizing the public presentation of ordinary social interaction activities that have been critical in allowing individuals to connect on a platform(Boyd, 2007).

Furthermore, in recent years, social networking sites have become a worldwide phenomenon. What began as a pastime for a few computer savvy individuals has evolved into societal conventions and a way of life for people all over the world (Brake, 2010) .

Users can engage via the internet through social networking, which is a social relationship between people who share interests, hobbies, and background connections (Shelby, 2010). 'Social networking sites, like much else on the internet, are a changing target for researchers and policymakers,' they stated.

Students in particular have made browsing social networking sites a daily practice and have reduced the way most students stay connected to their academic activities as many choose to chat online while many believe that social networking has no effect on their academic achievement (White, 2008). These factors prompted the researchers to investigate students' behaviors and the impact of social networking on academic success among senior secondary school students in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In Nigeria, individuals are more likely to participate in popular activities, especially students, who are the first to adopt new technologies, notably on social networking sites(Boyd, 2007).

Since the 1990s, when social media sites first appeared. In some places, it is thought that student academic success is being neglected and challenged. Between social networking activities and their academic work, there is a distraction and split concentration (Willard, 2009).

The sites have caused the most serious issues in our academic environment, with the typical student spending nine hours each week on social networking sites (Willard, 2009). Furthermore, it has been noticed that students spend more time on social media than they do on their education (Boyd, 2007) . So, what are the effects of social networking and how do they impact the academic success of senior secondary students in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
