CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
The prevalence of alcohol use among adolescents in tertiary institutions is causing great concern in various parts of the world. Alcohol use and misuse rates differ by country; for example, in the United States of America, 52 percent of eighth graders and 80 percent of high school seniors have used alcohol at some point, while 25 percent of eighth graders and 62 percent of high school seniors have been intoxicated (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism). Adeyemo, 2007; Youth Violence Prevention, 2000). The situation in Nigeria reveals a high prevalence of alcohol use among teenagers, with a high likelihood that the level of alcohol use will continue to rise. Many students in higher institutions in Nigeria are teenagers, and some of them participate in risky behaviors including smoking, reckless driving, premarital and indiscriminate sexual activities, alcohol abuse (binge drinking), and substance abuse. The high rate of death in Nigeria, especially among young people, may be linked to unhealthy lifestyles. Students who drink alcohol engage in a variety of unhealthy behaviors that have long-term consequences for their health and academic performance. When the consumption of alcohol rises, so does the prevalence of a number of unhealthy behaviors. Heavy drinking can cause depression and liver damage. Furthermore, alcohol affects many areas of the brain, but the memory, coordination, and decision cells are the most susceptible. Effects in the short term (usually lasts up to 72 hours after heavy use) Students' academic performance can be hampered by alcohol's physiological and psychological effects. Also small doses of alcohol impair cognitive capacities, and these effects will last for a long time after the acute effects of alcohol impairment have faded. Alcohol intake is linked to low academic performance in students, as it leads to students skipping classes, failing examinations, dropping out of school due to poor grades, and jeopardizing the academic mission of colleges and universities. Students' inability to keep up with academic responsibilities is one of the most common effects of substance abuse. In the context of this research, alcohol addiction refers to excessive alcohol consumption, often referred to as binge drinking. A variety of factors influence students' alcohol use and abuse, including parental lifestyles, peer influence, parental attachment, and adherence to traditional activities, among others. Each of these variables has a significant impact on the extent with which students consume alcohol. Adolescents who are well regulated and supervised by their parents are less likely to start drinking at a young age.
Statement of problem
Alcohol is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among students and the general public around the world. The use of alcohol is on the rise among university of Abuja students, both in terms of quantity and prevalence. Regardless of its effect on school completion, alcohol use may potentially influence a student's quality of learning and academic performance.Students who consume large amounts of alcohol are more likely to experience mood swings, anxiety, and depression
Objective of the study
1. To investigate if the prevalence of alcohol use among students of University of Abuja is significantly high
2. To examine if there is any difference in rates of alcohol use between students of different geopolitical regions
3. To investigate if the students who consume alcohol are aware of the harmful effects of it
Research Questions
1. Is the prevalence of alcohol use among students of university of Calabar significantly high?
2. Is there a difference in rates of alcohol use between students of different geopolitical regions?
3. Do the students who consume alcohol aware of the harmful effects of it?
Significance of the study
This study will be of significance to parents, guardians and school administrators as the educate their children against alcohol consumption and the effect it has on our health. It will also serve as raw data for prospective researchers who may want to conduct a similar analysis
Scope of the study
The study aims to examine the factors associated with alcohol use among students. The sample respondent of this study will be students of University of Abuja
Limitation of the study
During the course of this study, the researcher faced major challenges such as inadequate funds, time constraints, and a lack of research work.
