MANAGEMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF SOCIAL STUDIES IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1    BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

From an educational standpoint, resources refer to everything in the school that may be utilized to aid and promote teaching or learning (Edu, 1997). Human, financial, and physical resources are all included. Individuals participating in any of the school's operations, regardless of their level of placement, make up the human resources of a secondary school, much like any other formal organization of any sort and size. Academic and non-academic personnel, as well as students, are critical in achieving the school's goals and objectives. This implies that people are so important that without Human Resources Management, no school or business could attain the best possible results (Vincent, 1995). This course is determined by how well the personnel is handled in relation to other resources in the manufacturing process. Human Resources Management in the teaching and learning of social studies, according to Graham (1990), is the management of people's work and relationships inside the educational system. The goal of such management may not seem far-fetched; fundamentally, it is to gather together and grow into an effective organization, with consideration for the workers' well-being, so that they can contribute effectively to the school's success (1996).

1.2              STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Regardless of the availability of other resources in the school system, Human Resources are critical to developing and managing efficiently toward the stated aim of teaching and studying social studies in order to attain educational goals (Bell, 1999). The principal, vice-principal, teachers, students, and other non-teaching staff in secondary schools are all part of the Human Resources department. Secondary education produces middle-class workers, who are critical to the country's economic development. Teachers of social studies who are Human Resources, as well as other human beings in the school, required to be effectively managed to become effective in order to fulfill the intended secondary education objectives and have much needed quantitative manpower (Galer, 1993). In light of this, an attempt will be made during the project work on how the government, principals, stakeholders in secondary education, and all interested individuals can develop new strategies and use existing ones (such as in-service training, conferences, seminars, and workshops) to improve effectiveness in Human Resources Management in the teaching and learning of social studies in secondary school.

1.3               OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

In human resource management, the government plays a significant role. Human resources are essential in the classroom. The capacity of a teacher to teach and learn social studies is recognized by human resource management. The prerequisites for Human Resources Management in secondary school are the most effective approach to include human resource management into social studies teaching and learning.

1.4              RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following questions will be addressed by this project's work:

i. Does the federal government take a substantial role in human resource management?

ii. Is human resources a necessary resource in the classroom?

iii. Is human resources management aware of the efficacy of teachers in the teaching and learning of social studies?

iv. How might human resource management be effectively achieved in the teaching and learning of social studies in the past?

v. What are the requirements for Human Resource Management in secondary school?

1.5              SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study investigates the notion of Human Resource Management in secondary school. The material of this work will be of considerable relevance since it is an attempt to explain the notion of Human Resources Management effectiveness and development, which is considered as a process by which nations' human resources are developed. The availability of human resources in the teaching and learning of social studies in secondary schools, among other resources needed to attain educational goals, ensures that the affairs of such teaching and learning processes are well-planned, implemented, and assessed. Effective and efficient administration is one of the most valuable assets of any company, enterprise, industry, community, or country. In schools, development and progress toward educational goals can only be guaranteed when diverse methods and tactics for successful Human Resources Management are implemented. Furthermore, this project work will be beneficial to the Association of Social Studies Teachers since it will be carefully developed to ensure the best possible use of all data and discoveries, exposing everyone to the nooks and crannies of Human Resources Management in the United States.

1.6              SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The research's scope will include a targeted-population of accessible Human Resources within the region of interest; the case study area of Zaba Local Government will be investigated on the issue under investigation, with input from social studies teachers in the area's secondary schools.
