CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The origin of cult activities in Nigeria’s higher education dates back to 1952 when Wole Soyinka and Six others founded the PYRATES CONFRATERNITY. The remaining six are, Olumuyiwa Awe, Ralph Opara and Tunji Tubi. The others are Daig Imokhuede, Pius Olegbe and Olu Agunloye. The basic objective of the organization at that time was to elevate the social life of the university campus where orderliness and discipline could be planted in the mind of youths who were expected to be future leaders in Nigeria.Adejoro (1995) lamented that Soyinka and his associates were unaware that they were making history, and that they had yet to come to terms with the fact that student and youth radicalism was receiving a national boost, resulting in the emergence of a national vanguard. The creation was paradoxical to the point that they had no idea they were setting the groundwork for what would ultimately become gansterism.
According to Thompson (1998), young people enter because it provides them with immunity, it allows them to do what they want and get away with it, and it allows them to pursue revenge. In Nigeria, the Government, Corporate bodies, religious organization and individuals have been making frantic effort to see that cultism is brought under control through proper management. Osaigbovo (2000) identified the following cultism management techniques: Coercion ,Persuasion, public awareness campaign, Public renunciation and school disciplinary measures.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
Nigerian tertiary institutions have become "war zones" as a result of the activities of various hidden cults, with reports of intermittent shooting, particularly at night, as well as rapping, maiming, and theft by these cult members.Residents of these organizations live in constant fear of being attacked, which contributes to cult-related problems. Members' actions are discussed in low tones since they are shrouded in darkness and their rituals are nocturnal.even with the cultism management techniques being enforced by tertiary institution, they hasn’t been any reduction in cult activities/clashes.there is an increasing number of students who join cult despite management techniques set us by their institutions of learning.
