CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

 

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Special driver training programs for learners and pre-learners are offered by a variety of organizations and organisations. These programs generally seek to promote the development of safe driving skills and may include road law information and certain in-car components, which may be done on an off-road track or circuit, or on the road under supervision. Basic driving education is taught in a classroom setting. To acquire their driver's license, most individuals are taught to drive by a driving teacher, friends, family, or a mix of these. Basic vehicle control abilities, driving methods, traffic legislation knowledge, and the first driver's license are all covered in this kind of driver's instruction.

In developing nations, traffic accidents that result in injuries and fatalities continue to be a significant public health issue. According to Nantulya & Reich (2002), developing nations account for approximately 85% of all fatalities and 90% of disability adjusted life years. Delta was named the most hazardous city in terms of traffic accidents by the Federal Road Safety Commission in 2008. Despite attempts by the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other government agencies to decrease it, this number has remained high. As a consequence of poor driving abilities, bad driving impacts culture and social interaction patterns (such as swearing and fighting on the road). Driving in Delta is plagued by a plethora of issues. The common consensus is that many Delta drivers are irrational and insane behind the wheel, resulting in traffic jams that might be avoided. There are few vehicles on the road that do not carry the scars of past collisions, which may range from scratches to dents to complete eyesores. Bad roads, trailers/tankers, ‘danfo' (public buses) and ‘okada' (motor cycle) drivers, as well as the dread of being robbed, are all potential sources of tension, accidents, and road rage. The government, for its part, is constantly coming up with new ways to deal with traffic, including the use of organized groups such as the police, the Army, Traffic Wardens, Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), and so on, but it's not always clear whether they're actually contributing to the problem.Most drivers, according to Oyesiku (2004), lack fundamental driving skills, which he blames on illegal methods of getting a driver's license, since many people choose to avoid conventional driving schools and learn on the road, which may result in the loss of lives or limbs.

All of these problems are caused by people's attitudes and driving behaviors. The propensity of individuals to assess a situation with some degree of liking or hate is dealt with by an attitude, which is a mental stance related to a way of thinking or being, and may typically be stated in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral terms. A driving habit, or a collection of behaviors performed on a regular basis, may be learned or acquired.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

If a country's production is poor, it will never really progress. Driving seems to use a significant amount of our energy and time. The country can not expect to grow until the contributing reasons to poor productivity are addressed, which include offensive driving skills, lost man hours, high road fatality rates, and an average production level. People who refuse to participate in appropriate training will continue to misbehave, which will have an impact on the economy. As a result, studies are being conducted to determine the effect of training on motorists' attitudes and driving behaviors.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

The objectives of this study are to:

  1. know the overall degree of public knowledge of the Institute among Delta motorists.
  2. Assess the institute's degree of readiness to manage the program.
  3. Learn about the impact the training has had on the attitudes of Delta State motorists.

 

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. What is the overall degree of public knowledge of the Institute among motorists?
  2. What is the institute's degree of readiness to manage the program?
  3. What impact does the training have on motorists' attitudes?

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The goal of the research was to look at drivers' attitudes and behaviors before and after training, as well as the Institute's readiness for the drivers' retraining program.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The research focused on the impact of the drivers training institute program on drivers driving skills in Asaba, Delta state, Nigeria.

1.7 LIMITATION OF STUDY

The study was limited to drivers in Delta state, particularly Asaba, Delta state, Nigeria, given the short duration of the study and the budget limitations.

1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

DRIVERS TRAINING : Driver training means instruction to teach an individual to drive a vehicle so that the individual will be able to obtain or retain a driver's license.

DRIVERS' DRIVING SKILLS: Driving skills are abilities a person may have when they are working in a position that involves driving vehicles.
