A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF CORRELATION BETWEEN LEARNING STYLES AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE STUDENTS.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  1. Background Of The Study

The structure of the educational system is one of the most important determinants of educational excellence. The evaluation of educational establishments is predicated on an analysis of the most significant educational features (Crow & Crow, 2017). The evaluation of educational success is deserving of consideration as one of the most significant forms of educational assessment. One of the most important and unavoidable pillars of educational system reform, particularly at universities, is the continuous assessment of the educational accomplishment of students during their time in school and the investigation of the elements that contribute most to that achievement. The performance of students or their academic accomplishments may be used to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational system. According to Hartley (2019), academic accomplishment is regarded as an important factor to examine when determining the potentialities and capacities of an individual. In addition to academic achievement, it takes into account a variety of criteria, including the perspectives, interests, personality traits, and socioeconomic status of the students involved. In addition, according to Holliday (2019), academic accomplishment is defined as a measurement of the information obtained via formal education, and it is often shown by test scores, grade, grade points, average, and degrees. Moreover, academic accomplishment is defined as the predefined degree of attainment of competency in academic work designed by test results. This level is based on the student's overall performance (Olatunde, 2020). It is possible to reach the conclusion that academic accomplishment is the primary criterion that demonstrates students' performance as the end product of the learning process, which is the primary factor to be considered while competing with other employees. A student's level of academic accomplishment has a significant impact in determining how well he or she will be prepared for the jobs that will be available to them in the future. Students are also given the opportunity to pursue highly competitive areas. In addition, success in academics is often indicative of an intellectually developed mind, which may be beneficial to students in many facets of their life. The greatest degree of education demonstrates that a person has achieved a high level of academic success, which is necessary to succeed in the workplace and advance one's career. Additionally, Sternberg (2020) argues that the academic achievement of learners has attracted the attention of scholars, parents, policy makers, and planners. The performance (academic achievement) of the students is an important factor in producing graduates of the highest possible quality. These graduates will go on to become excellent leaders and manpower for the country, and as a result, they will be responsible for the economic and social growth of the country (Vermunt, 2019,).

There are a number of elements that are connected with the academic success of students in higher education. This is true in terms of academic accomplishment. Keefe (2021) explains the elements, both within and outside of the school, that influence the level of academic accomplishment that children attain. In addition, Gokalp (2018) asserts that we may classify these elements as follows: student factors, family factors, school factors, and peer factors. In addition, one of such features in students' variables is their particular approach to learning. Dizney (2022), who asserts that a person's learning style is one of the factors that may be used to predict their level of academic success, lends credence to this theory. To summarize, pupils' individual approaches to learning play the most significant part in determining their overall academic success. A person's preferred and most effective mode of education is referred to as their "learning style." There is no question that each pupil learns in their own unique manner. Several of the pupils quickly became used to the aural, visual, and kinestatic components. To summarize, each and every pupil has to be provided with the appropriate therapy. This idea is reinforced by Allport (2017), who explains that a person's preferred method of learning and processing information is referred to as their "learning style." Some children are more likely to learn by reading, other students are more likely to learn through listening, and the remaining pupils are more likely to learn through experience. A person's chosen mode of education is what Olatunde (2020) refers to as their "learning style." In addition, Hartley (2019) believes that a student's learning style is both a trait that signals how the student learns and how effectively they learn, as well as an instructional technique that informs the cognition, context, and content of learning. In addition, Yeaung, Read, and Schmid (2015) assert that a student's preferred learning style relates to the manner in which the student responds to stimuli in a learning setting as well as the distinctive approach in which the student acquires and makes use of knowledge. Learning style is one of the primary elements that helps determine how effectively and how quickly children learn a second language or foreign language. This may have an effect on the students' understanding in reading, writing, listening, and speaking the target language. In addition, according to Nzesei (2015), making use of an understanding of one's preferred method of learning within the context of their educational experience fosters more efficient learning and greater academic performance. He goes on to say that if both the instructor and the students are aware of the various learning styles, students will be more driven to study since they would be aware of both their strengths and shortcomings. In a nutshell, educators have the ability to adapt their methods of instruction and make use of a wider variety of educational strategies when they have a better understanding of the preferences and methods of learning of their students. Therefore, the study seeks to critically analyze the correlation between learning styles and academic p6of students.

    1. Statement Of The Problem

The vast majority of instructors in Nigerian schools have neither determined the most effective methods of instruction nor how students learn best in the classroom. The current low achievement in most subjects makes it clear that learners have not yet learned how to learn or discovered their preferred learning styles for the various learning materials or content found within these subjects. This is evidenced via way of means of the reality that newbies have now no longer but completed the cutting-edge low degree of achievement. In addition, educators have a fundamental misunderstanding of the variety of students who make up a regular classroom, and as a result, they continue to use the same antiquated pedagogical practices regardless of the setting (Vermunt,2019). As a direct result of this, kids experience boredom and lack of attention in the classroom, have poor performance on assessments, grow disheartened about the topic, the curriculum, and themselves, and, in the most extreme circumstances, drop out of school. When confronted with poor grades, unresponsive or hostile learners, poor attendance, and dropouts, teachers know something is not working; as a result, they may become overly critical of their students, which makes the situation even worse, or they may begin to question whether or not they are in the right It is thus very necessary, in order to cultivate effective and successful learners, to have an understanding of the preferred learning style of the learners and how this preference is related to academic accomplishment.

    1. Objectives Of The Study

The broad objective of the study is to critically analyze the correlation between learning styles and academic p6of students. The specific objectives is as follows:

  1. To examine the extent at which visual learning style enhance academic performance of students.

  2. To find out the extent at which auditory learning style enhance academic performance of students.

  3. To investigate the extent at which kinesthetic learning style enhance academic performance of students.

    1. Research Questions

The following questions have been prepared for the study:

  1. What is the extent at which visual learning style enhance academic performance of students?

  2. What is the extent at which auditory learning style enhance academic performance of students?

  3. What is the extent at which kinesthetic learning style enhance academic performance of students?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

Ho: There is no significant relationship between learning style and students academic performance.

Ha: There is a significant relationship between learning style and students academic performance.

1.5 Significance Of The Study

This research is important for educators because it will familiarize them with the notion of learning style as a component that, among other things, may determine whether or not students are successful in their academic endeavors. In addition, teachers are able to manage their classes and provide individualized attention to each student if they take into account the various learning styles of their pupils. In addition, it will be helpful for the people who generate the content in terms of producing and designing material that is well suited to learning styles. If you do this, you will ensure that the learning materials and styles are fit for your particular learning style. Hence, the designer of the course or class might conduct a survey to get insight into the various learning styles used by students. It is essential for the designer of the course to place the students in the appropriate dimension of learning style and the appropriate class with other individuals in their same situation.

1.7 Scope Of The Study

The study will examine the extent at which visual learning style enhance academic performance of students. The study will also find out the extent at which auditory learning style enhance academic performance of students. Lastly, the study will investigate the extent at which kinesthetic learning style enhance academic performance of students. Hence, the study is delimited to Ogun State.

1.8 Limitations Of The Study

Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire, and interview), which is why the researcher resorted to a moderate choice of sample size. More so, the researcher will
