A CRITICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON WORK FLEXIBILITY

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19), a pandemic gripping the world, has posed new challenges to civilization, prompting people to rethink a broad range of activities, from work to recreation to simple travel and everyday duties. Not only has this had an individual effect, but it has also had an economic impact on countries as a whole, bringing a variety of economic sectors to a complete halt. While there was much anticipation and numerous alerts, particularly from those in the public health field, the challenge persisted as a significant transition that necessitated preparation, training, and facilitation. Though civilization made mental preparations, the scope and approach remained unimaginable and remains a major challenge. COVID-19 is a novel illness that has been circulating in humans since December of this year. It belongs to the coronavirus family, which also included the viruses that triggered the SARS outbreak in Southeast Asia in 2002 and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome outbreak in 2012. Since the primary mode of propagation is currently understood to be through respiratory droplets, it is thought to propagate through direct communication with other humans. the only resources available to prevent virus transmission are the correct use of gloves, the implementation of social distancing steps, and the promotion of good hand hygiene (Centre for Health Protection [CHP] 2020). On January 31, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 epidemic a global health emergency (World Health Organisation 2020). Since then, the virus has quickly spread. If the coronavirus spreads around the globe, several countries have enforced and reimposed stringent lockdowns that include the closing of non-essential enterprises and the prohibition of non-essential meetings in order to protect hospitals from being overrun by COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on the workplace, challenging long-held assumptions about how employees can meet their responsibilities. There has been a shift from the traditional or classic practice of working in the office, to remote working.many companies have shifted to remote work, with video calls and instant messaging replacing meetings and break room conversations. Before the pandemic, the idea of working from home was a fantasy to many people, but such practice was considered to ensure the safety of workers and to reduce the spread of the covid 19 virus.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Working from home was on the rise, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, when many companies saw the advantages to their businesses and better work-life balance for their workers.Working from home may not be suitable for everyone's lifestyle, for example, some people may have young children who are oblivious to boundaries and cause disruptions during the working day. Others will not have the necessary physical space to set up a dedicated work area.some employees enjoy face-to-face contact with coworkers and feel that direct feedback from their boss is highly helpful in completing assignments and achieving their objectives. It can be difficult to manage and track the success of home staff. Different personalities can react to monitoring in a positive or negative way.initial preparation expenses for supplying enough devices such as computers, cell phones, data subscriptions, and other items can lead to work inflexibilities.
