  INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Public relation is very relevant in organizations today since it has become the most powerful tool to express the image of an organization to the public. Public relations are often key strategic enablers in today’s highly competitive business environment. Well-articulated Public relations strategies will always provide a good working strategy aimed at improving the company’s image to the public. Public relations strategy is seen to be the outcome of a strategic thinking process by senior management mainly to improve on strategic management in order to have a better company’s image communicated to the public.

According to Edward Louis Bernays (2015), Public Relations is “practically as old as society”. Patrick Jackson, a publisher of the Public Relations society of America (PRSA) asserts that Public Relations arose from the basic need of building and improving human relationship which existed immediately God created Adam and Eve. The concept of Public Relations has been with man. The creation of Public Relations between the creator and the creature both bought harmony and understanding in their relationship. Public Relations, however, existed during the days of Moses. Moses was a stutter and needed someone who would convey message to the Israelites on his behalf. Aaron, his brother was appointed; therefore, he was a link between the Israelites and Moses. From the biblical perspective, Aaron was a public relations officer. Thus, public relations has been practiced, even if only amateurish, since the beginning of mankind.

In ancient societies, human communication was limited by space and time. Due to the absence of modern technology, majority of the people lived simple lives in farms and small settlement. Therefore, communication flow in the olden days was primarily personal. The potentials and application of Public Relations increased as societies became more urbanized, civilized and complex. As population increased, so did the need problems of Public Relations.

Today's world is a world of communication and in every second, millions of information units are exchanged in the world. Since development of human life, information and communication have increased and nowadays accurate and concrete information has become very important and people with up to date information tend to be Successful.  Public relations in organizations in term of work quality means assist to organization management in achieving organizational goals, brings about transparency and accountability, respect citizens' rights etc.

According to Lamb and Mc Kee (2005) “no formal organization is an island. Each is composed of an internal system of social networks, and each exists within a framework of interrelated systems of relationships with key stakeholders such as competitors, consumers, sponsors, regulators, and the media”. Lamb and Mc Kee (2005) therefore, argued that public relations is an important subsystem of an organization and the effective practice of public relations is integrally bound to the health of an organization. As such, it provides the avenue for the organization to effectively monitor, interact and react with other key groups within the organizational environment. Public relations is thought of as the communication and action on the part of an organization that supports development and maintenance of mutually beneficial relationships between the organization and the groups with which it is interdependent. The above, therefore, shows that public relations, as a subsystem within an organization, plays an important, if not integral, part in ensuring that organizations meet their overall aims and objectives.

Public relations is a powerful management tool if approached with strategic integrity, alignment and focus. An organizational performing with coherence and its energy focus on a specific goal is far more effective than one that allows confused and inconsistence messages to disseminate from management. A well-managed, sustainable and consistence public relations agenda or initiative can reap long term benefits for the organization.

The impact of public relations has been embarked upon as a tool for organizational performance, efficiency and effectiveness and organization output in a corporate organization.
