AN INVESTIGATION OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT AS A LIFELONG EDUCATION AND STRATEGY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA. (A CASE STUDY OF DELTA STATE)

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is an irrefutable reality that is one of the most important tools for national growth. Education is a critical tool for national and long-term development since it entails the learning of fundamental information and development skills that are required for technical breakthroughs and socio-political development that promotes economic progress. The incorporation of entrepreneurship education is required for the development of a knowledge-based educational system that is both structurally and functionally sound. Sustainable development has become a major concern for all well-intentioned governments around the world as a result of entrepreneurial education (Ogedengbe et al., 2013; Laurie et al., 2016). As a result, a number of initiatives and programs have been discovered and constructed in these administrations around the world to promote the development of an entrepreneurial mindset in all sectors. According to Kuratcko (2009), it is quickly becoming a central focus of economies internationally due to its impact on economic growth and sustainable development via entrepreneurial drive and tenacity. As a result, Nigeria, as a country, should sit back and watch other countries flourish in their quest for economic independence and variety. This will result in progress in reducing unemployment and poverty, as well as addressing issues such as young restlessness and other socioeconomic challenges confronting today's youth.According to (Eneh, 2011), the fact that the country has remained a developing country throughout the years has bolstered the case for enterprises and individuals to fully embrace and implement the concepts of entrepreneurship. This is evident in the large number of educated school leavers with good educational qualifications strolling the streets of our cities looking for work. According to Adawo and Atan (2013), the problem has evolved into a full-fledged challenge among postsecondary institutions' graduates. This is a sad condition because most young people who are meant to be productive and active members of society end up as beggars, migrating from one part of town, state, and country to another in pursuit of better pastures for which they are unprepared and unequipped. As a result, Bolarin (2012)'s argument that the necessity to carefully re-assess or re-evaluate the type and quality of education available to youths in Nigerian higher institutions of learning is becoming imminent, is supported. Anyaogu (2009) also believes that higher schools should be focused on creating graduates that are useful to society and the economy as a whole. Graduates who will be able to apply their knowledge and talents to change and shape the environment while also creating jobs that will empower them. As a result, a variety of crimes have grown in popularity, including kidnapping, prostitution, ritual killings, human trafficking, fraud, gambling, and oil pipeline damage, to name a few (Adesina, 2013). The unemployment rate increased from 10.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2015 to 12.1 percent in the March quarter of 2016, according to a study from the National Bureau of Statistics (2016). Furthermore, the Human Development Index (HDI), a metric that evaluates a country's wealth, does not reflect favorably on Nigeria, with the country ranked 152nd on the index (UNDP, 2016). As a result, it is important to note that poverty and unemployment continue to climb despite the government's implementation of new educational reforms, such as the addition of 34 trade courses such as catering, arts and crafts, cosmetology, and garment manufacturing, to name a few. As a result, entrepreneurial education continues to be a panacea for long-term development.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Entrepreneurship education should be implemented at all levels of Nigeria's educational system to assist in addressing the rising rate of young and graduate unemployment, overreliance on white collar jobs, declining economic growth, and overall national development.This is because it is hoped that the entrepreneurial skills students gain through entrepreneurship education will help graduates become more creative, innovative, and self-sufficient. Despite the noble goals of entrepreneurial education programs throughout the educational system, a close examination of the current state of affairs in Nigerian education reveals that the type of education provided to students still places a premium on the traditional core academic areas, with a high regard for certificates for graduates, who are typically trained to be job seekers rather than entrepreneurs.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The objectives of this study are to:

I.       To determine the adequacy of trained lecturers in Nigerian universities for entrepreneurship education.

II.    To assess the adequacy of entrepreneurship education facilities/equipment in Nigerian universities.

III. To determine the adequacy of instructional materials for entrepreneurship education in Nigeria's universities.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

I.       What is the adequacy of trained lecturers in Nigerian universities for entrepreneurship education?

II.    What is the adequacy of facilities/equipment for entrepreneurship education in Nigeria's universities?

III. What is the adequacy of instructional materials for entrepreneurship education in Nigeria's universities?

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this research is to look at the concept of entrepreneurship, the characteristics of an entrepreneur, the goal of entrepreneurship, a brief history of entrepreneurship in Nigeria, theories of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship challenges, the concept of sustainable development, the contributions of entrepreneurship in a developing economy like Nigeria, and recommendations and cons.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study focuses on the investigation of entrepreneurship development as a lifelong education and strategy for sustainable development in Nigeria. The study also used the University of Abuja in Nigeria as a case study.

1.7 LIMITATION OF STUDY

The research was restricted to the University of Abuja in Nigeria.This is because not all schools can be covered, given the short duration of studies and the budget limitations.

1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Entrepreneurship: the activity of setting up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit.

Development: The process of developing or being developed.

Education: Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, morals, beliefs, and habits.

Sustainable Development: Sustainable development is the idea that human societies must live and meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
