DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF A COMPUTERIZED E-LEARNING AND E-EDUCATION WEB-PORTAL
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
E-education is the process of learning online. Whether you're a high school student or a graduate college student, a person looking to expand technical skills or a retiree who simply wants to learn more, electronic learning provides a boundary-free way to broaden your horizons that allows the teacher to be able to communicate with its students across the web either through receiving lectures or assessment (electronic tutoring and electronic assessment) and also delivering any other information that is necessary for the student’s progress .This application is developed on the web which comprises of three tiers which are the client, the server and the database, the server and the database are the part of the system that would be used by the teacher to hold the resources to be displayed as well as editing of such resources .The server and the database can be said to work hand in hand and used by the same person, while the client tier is used by the student to view the resources as well as interacting with the lecture. These three tiers can be interacting with one another to create an online and real time application. These tiers can all work hand in hand to create an effective communication between the teacher and the student. These have been an increased interest in the area of computer technology in Nigeria through the introduction of the internet. This has aided communication between two distant parties in the country, there by enlarging the interest of electronic learning in Nigeria.
The e- learning system comprises of two main section, the electronics tutoring (e-learning) and the electronics assessment (e-assessment) .The e-tutoring aspect is concerned with the learning part where student come on line to receive lectures, take review questions and also view summary and the note key of lecture received. The e-assessment section is just where the student take tests, exercise, quiz to know how far they have learnt since the commencement of the lectures.
The application and processes involved are web based learning, virtual classroom, computer based learning and they are accessed through the internet CD-ROM.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The problems that this application will try to solve are:
i. Inadequate learning resources such as lecture note and virtual classrooms for viewing lectures.
ii. Shortage of experience lectures.
iii. Boredom associated with long lecture hours.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The aim of this study is to create an interactive electronic learning system which would be used to improve our current learning system as well as providing means at which learning can be done at one’s convenient time.
The objectives of this study are:
i.) to develop non-expensive interactive tools like message board tool,
discussion group tool and chat tool to provide interaction between the student and the instructor,
ii.) to introduce members of the academics to the concept of e-Learning, online learning and virtual learning,
iii.) to foster better and cordial interaction among members of the academic community(staff and students), and
iv.) To develop a cost effective and efficient system (almost free) for
disseminating educational resources between the students and lecturers.
v.) to design a system with reusable components, feasibility and
provision for system expansion without compromising system performance
1.4 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This study revolves around the design and implementation of an e-learning system for undergraduate students. The system will be able to get and store student’s profile information, educational information. Students will be able to access notes and lecture materials dropped off by the lecturers. They will be able to ask questions and receive answers during online sessions, submit assignments and get their scores. Due to some limitations met during the research, the system does not cover the calculation of the overall grade points at the end of the session.
1.5 JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY
This work could be useful for students or officers in any schooling organization. The system provides a user friendly system that facilitates quick and efficient learning to cover larger section of students no matter their location and distance. The software also provides paperless and cashless transaction solution and also has network based solutions to operate multiple counters simultaneously in a closed environment.
1.6 ASSUMPTION OF THE STUDY
During the process of data collection, information relating to e-learning was obtained from Yaba Tech. The information was collected from the admin staff during the course of my study. Hence, it is assumed that all the data collected are correct and contains no false information.
1.7 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
The following are some factors, which acted as an impeachment or constraints to the progress of the project work;
a. Lack of Documented materials: It was difficult to start the project initially because reference materials at my disposal are limited.
b. Financial constraint is another factors that limited the researcher in owning out this project effectively.
c. Reluctance by the respondents in giving information fearing that the information sought would be used to intimidate them or print a negative image about them.
