CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

 

 

1.1 Background of study

The traditional methods of managing a library are no longer dynamic and efficient for expeditions, knowledge retrieval and dissemination, and improved student service; the use of current technology has become critical.A well-built student will benefit from the digital library's quick and efficient services.A digital library is an automated or electronic library where operations such as accessing, sharing, and storing resources are done with the aid of a computer. The term "digital" refers to the understanding of design and its implementation.Electronic circuit development is a term used to describe the process of creating electronic circuits. It covers systems such as word processing and spreadsheets.messaging systems, micrographic, reprographic, and video-based information systemsFax, voice mail, e-mail, and the internet are examples of transmission methods (Encyclopedia,The internet is a worldwide network of computers linked over long distances (Brown, 2008). It was developed as a means of communication by the United States military and was in use from the 1950s until the mid-late 1980s, when commercial and educational institutions began to rely on it.The reason for this is because of the high costs. Communication links have improved and expenses have decreased as a result of rapid technological advancements. As a result, the internet is now more broadly accessible to a larger number of people. Since the internet is now accessible to a large portion of the Western world's population, numerous educational institutions have taken advantage of its instructional potential. For students looking for project and assignment ideas, the internet is an excellent resource. With over 50 million websites on the Internet, any information, no matter how obscure, is likely to be found. The only things you'll need to find this information are a little patience and a good search engine (Ehrmann, 2008).Libraries can not exist as a single unit without the use of technology to connect their resources. These digital libraries' collections are not restricted to surrogate development, but also include digital items that can not be represented or transmitted in printed versions. The emergence of the world wide web is perhaps the greatest symbol of this shift, with all the applications for scholarly communication, the rise of computational science, the new role of databases, and the techniques being introduced. Digital libraries are those that are heavily supported by networks, have access to electronic databases, have an online public access catalogue, and, to some extent, give email and internet services to their users, and have at least a portion of their information resources in an electronic format. Electronic technology is profoundly and dramatically changing the fabric of our lives as the world's corporate activities modernize. Organizations have adopted the usage of the internet and, in particular, the use of digital libraries to be a player in development and to experience everything in the world today. Cooperate with initiatives in the exchange of information and resources to avoid duplication of effort and to provide access to remote and undeserved communities.

1.2 Statement of problem

Some of the issues that plagued the traditional library are perpetuated by the automated library. Because document collections are still on paper, a localized medium, the need for local collections, the space required for paper documents, the inflexibility of paper documents, the separation of documents from users, opening hours for collections (though no longer for the catalog), and competition for the use of copies of documents all remain a problem in both libraries: The catalog can be utilized in a variety of settings. With remote access to the on-line catalog, the user is no longer isolated from the catalog, and the distinction between catalog and documents is partly blurred, as a catalog may now be utilized in the book stacks online. The automated library is a substantial advance, but it addresses only a part of the issues, and, with the exception of the online catalog, it helps those who provide the service rather than those who use it.

 

1.3 Objective of study

The following are primary objectives of this study:

1. To investigate the impact of a computerized library on students' academic achievement.

2. To examine if computerization of the library would enhance its efficiency.

3. To determine the extent to which students utilize the electronic library.

 

1.4 Research question

1. What effect does a computerized library have on students' academic achievement?

2. Will the library's computerization increase its efficiency?

3. How much do students use the electronic library?

1.5 Significance of study

This study is crucial in a number of ways. It is expected to establish a link between student impressions of library computerization and academic accomplishment. The findings of this study are expected to reveal the challenges that students experience when using digital and traditional libraries, as well as how this problem affects their overall academic progress, particularly in science-related courses. Knowledge of computerized libraries will enable school administrators, lecturers, and teachers to begin collaborating to address some of the issues that students face when using computerized libraries and integrating information and communication technology (ICT) in general for improved educational outcomes.

 

1.6 Scope of study

This study focuses on investigating the impact of a computerized library on students' academic achievement. it also examine if computerization of the library would enhance its efficiency. Lastly, to determine the extent to which students utilize the electronic library. This study is limited to Ave maria international academy, Brainfield group of schools, and Hallel college

 

1.7 Limitation of study

Availability of materials, finance and time constraints to combine research work and academic work were major challenges the researcher encountered during this research.

 

1.8 Definition of terms

Computerization: Equipping with a general purpose computer, embedded computer or computer system. Imputing data into computers, creating computer generated content.

 

Academic achievement: Academic achievement is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has attained their short or long-term educational goals. Completion of educational benchmarks such as secondary school diplomas and bachelor's degrees represent academic achievement.

 

Library: A library is an organized collection of information and similar resources made accessible to a defined community for reference of borrowing it.
