A STUDY INTO THE ROLE OF RUSSIA IN THE NIGERIA CIVIL WAR
This research work deals clearly on the role international Community played in bringing the much desired peace and unity to the Nigeria state. This study laid emphasis on Russia’s role in the Nigeria Civil War. It has often been noted that the Socialist bloc states were often diametrically opposed politically, ideologically to the capitalist countries and hence they critically identified with the colonized people in the latter’s wars of freedom. The period of the Nigeria conflict coincided with the cold war era where the Western bloc and the East were at logger head in international politics. This explains the major reason the Russians were interested in the Nigeria politics. However, the crisis presented a situation where the Capitalist nations and the then Socialist countries worked hand in hand albeit for different objectives to achieve the same result.
Russia’s role presents a situation where a policy disagreement amongst Eastern bloc led to military conflict between some states notably the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia on August 20th 1968.
This work has been divided into five chapters for clarity and presentation of facts.
Chapter one deals with the political development in Nigeria. This period witnessed the amalgamation, politics of Independence and Coups that led to Civil Unrest in the country.
Chapter two takes a crucial look at the nature of the Nigerian Civil War.
